The Conservative candidate for Hendon last night failed for the third time so far in this General Election campaign to attend a hustings to defend his five year record. The West Hendon Residents Association hustings took place at Marsh Drive community centre for residents in the NW9 postal district of West Hendon.
Mr Offord was also a no show at the Middlesex University and Mencap hustings.
Labour candidate for Hendon Andrew Dismore, said:
‘If the Conservative candidate’s contempt for West Hendon residents was not already visible, it certainly is now, following his ‘no show’ at the West Hendon hustings. Residents in West Hendon have been let down by him, his government and his Conservative Council.
‘In 2010 he was only too happy to attend as many hustings as possible but now he is running scared, unwilling to answer questions and showing contempt for residents who want to question his record. In contrast, as the then defending candidate, I did not decline any hustings invitations.
‘Equally shocking were his no-shows at the hustings for Middlesex University and Mencap. Hendon is home to a very large university and young people are crying out for their voices to be heard. I got their message loud and clear but students had no chance to question the Conservative candidate.
‘Those with learning difficulties and their carers also have the right to vote and to be engaged in the democratic process, as the inquiry and report I supervised when chair of Parliament’s Human Rights Committee in the 2005/10 parliament clearly demonstrated . They have a right to question their candidates and so they have also been denied the chance to hold the Conservative candidate to account for his and his government’s record.
‘I also understand he is refusing to attend the forthcoming education themed hustings organised by the NUT.’
